Free Martin - Free Martin (English spelling)

This refers to the phenomenon in which, when opposite-sex twins are born in cattle, the female becomes infertile with a high probability of 90%, or to the infertile individual. Structures similar to testes are often found in the ovaries of freemartins. In extreme cases, even spermatogonia and Sertoli cells, which are normally found in the testes, can be found. This has been thought to be due to blood exchange occurring in twin cattle due to fusion of the choroids during fetal development, causing changes in the ovaries due to the male's testicular hormones. However, in recent years, it has become clear that male and female cells involved in sex determination also exchange with each other, calling into question whether the hormonal theory alone can explain this phenomenon.

ウシに雌雄の異性双生子が生まれると90％の高い確率で雌が不妊になる現象、またはその不妊個体をいう。フリーマーチンの卵巣には精巣に似た構造がみいだされることが多い。極端な場合には、本来精巣にある精原細胞やセルトリ細胞まで認められることがある。原因としては、双生子のウシでは胎児期に脈絡膜の癒合によって血液の交流がおこり、雄の精巣ホルモンによって卵巣が変化するためと考えられてきた。しかし近年、性決定にかかわる雌雄の細胞もまた相互に交流することが明らかとなり、ホルモン説だけでこの現象を説明することは疑問視されている。
