A mountain range in the western suburbs of Sydney in the state of New South Wales in southeastern Australia, part of the Great Dividing Range. It is mostly a plateau (maximum 1,093 m), and deep gorges with steep cliffs have developed, especially on the eastern side. After repeated failed attempts to cross the cliffs since 1789, in 1813 Blaxland and his party developed a route along the ridge and succeeded in crossing to the west side. The ridge is the main road and railway heading inland from Sydney to the west, and it is known as a tourist destination mainly for its gorge scenery.
