Also called weight. The magnitude of the Earth's gravity acting on an object. At a location where the Earth's gravitational acceleration is g , the weight of an object with mass m is mg . Because g varies with location, the weight of an object also varies with location, but since the difference is small, it can be considered to be approximately constant. Therefore, in engineering, the gravitational unit system, which uses weight instead of mass as the base unit, has been commonly used, but in recent years it is being replaced by the SI unit system. The gravitational acceleration on the moon's surface is 1/6 that of the Earth's surface, and the mass of an object does not change, so the weight of the same object on the moon's surface is 1/6 of its weight on the Earth's surface. Furthermore, weight in a fluid appears to decrease by the amount of buoyancy, and this is called apparent weight.
