A scholar from the late Qing Dynasty in China. His pen name was Ekigo and his pen name was Kuiyuan. He was from Changsha, Hunan Province. He was a Jinshi in 1865, and was appointed as the head of the Imperial Academy and then the head of education in Jiangsu. In 1889, he left his post and became a leader in the education world in his hometown, later receiving the title of Cabinet Scholar. Politically, he was a conservative who preached the holy path, and despised the Reform Movement of the Year of the Hundred. He is also said to have made a fortune in Changsha by associating with wealthy merchants. After the Xinhai Revolution, he changed his name to Tong and literally lived in seclusion. He edited large volumes of works, including the chronological histories of the Qing dynasty, "Donghua Lu" and "Donghua Xulu," and the "Continuation of the Commentary on the Classic of Imperial Qing," a collection of research books on the classics. He also left behind famous works of textual research, such as "Supplementary Commentaries on the Book of Han" and "Commentary on the Collection of the Later Han."
