Checking the function of the ovaries, corpus luteum, and placenta

Both estrogen and progesterone are female hormones secreted by the ovaries.

Estrogen plays a role in maintaining the first half of the sexual cycle, such as the expression of female secondary sexual characteristics, maintaining reproductive function, maturation of ovarian follicles, promoting ovulation, and proliferation of the endometrium.

On the other hand, progesterone plays a role in maintaining the latter half of the sexual cycle, such as inhibiting follicular development, thickening the endometrium, and maintaining pregnancy.

These hormones are tested when examining ovarian, corpus luteum, and placental function.

Measures based on test results

Estrogen and progesterone values vary greatly between individuals, by gender, and by age and menstrual cycle, so these are taken into consideration when interpreting them.

In other words, rather than making a diagnosis based on a single measurement, measurements are taken several times on different days and the measurement values are then comprehensively judged.

The main diseases suspected are

Estrogen

High level → estrogen-producing tumor, congenital adrenal enzyme deficiency

Low value → ovarian insufficiency, luteal insufficiency

Progesterone

High level → Use of ovulation inducers

Low value → ovarian insufficiency, luteal insufficiency

The general terms used by doctors are "estrogen" and "progesterone"
