Being exposed to radiation. Exposure from radiation sources outside the body is called external exposure, and the problematic types of radiation include highly penetrating high-energy beta rays, X-rays, gamma rays, and neutron rays. On the other hand, exposure from radioactive materials that are taken into the body and deposited there through food, drink, the air, or contaminated wounds is called internal exposure. For example, strontium 90, which tends to deposit in bones, affects various parts of the body through white blood cells produced in the bone marrow. Other distinctions include whole-body exposure and partial exposure, and acute exposure and chronic exposure.

放射線の照射を受けること。体外の放射線源からの被曝を外部被曝と呼び，透過力の強い高エネルギーのβ線，X線，γ線，中性子線などが問題となる。一方，飲食物や大気，傷口の汚染などによって体内に取り込まれて沈着した放射性物質による被曝を，内部被曝という。たとえば骨に沈着しやすいストロンチウム 90は，骨髄でつくられる白血球を通して体内の各所に影響を及ぼす。ほかに全身被曝と部分被曝，急性被曝と慢性被曝などの区別がある。
