Kariganesou - Kariganesou

Japanese: カリガネソウ - かりがねそう
Kariganesou - Kariganesou

A perennial plant of the Verbenaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). The stem is 0.8 to 1.2 meters tall. The whole plant has a strong fragrance. The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate, sharply pointed at the tip, and have blunt sawtooth edges. In August and September, the flower stalks grow in the leaf axils, and the cymes produce blue-purple flowers. The base of the corolla is tubular, the tip opens wide like a lip, and the four stamens and style curve and protrude long outside the corolla. It grows on the banks of streams and in shady forest edges in the hilly and mountainous regions of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is also distributed in Korea and China. The name comes from the shape of the flower, which resembles a flying wild goose. Kariganesou was once part of the Acanthaceae genus, but was separated into the new genus Kariganesou in 1999.
