A city in the western part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is also written as Meerut. Its population is 1,074,229, and including the surrounding area, it is 1,167,399 (2001). It is located about 60 km northeast of Delhi. It is a key railway location, with industries such as food, hosiery, and chemicals, and serves as a distribution center for agricultural products. It developed in the early 19th century when the British made it a military garrison. Its development was particularly remarkable in the first few years of the middle of the 19th century, during which the population tripled. The Sepoy Mutiny was initiated here around that time. Even today, a large Indian military garrison remains in the northern part of the city. [Harumi Nakayama] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
