Meerut - Meerut (English spelling)

A city in the western part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is also written as Meerut. Its population is 1,074,229, and including the surrounding area, it is 1,167,399 (2001). It is located about 60 km northeast of Delhi. It is a key railway location, with industries such as food, hosiery, and chemicals, and serves as a distribution center for agricultural products. It developed in the early 19th century when the British made it a military garrison. Its development was particularly remarkable in the first few years of the middle of the 19th century, during which the population tripled. The Sepoy Mutiny was initiated here around that time. Even today, a large Indian military garrison remains in the northern part of the city.

インド北部、ウッタル・プラデシュ州西部の都市。ミーラトとも表記する。人口107万4229、周辺部を含む人口116万7399（2001）。デリーの北東約60キロメートルに位置する。鉄道の要地で、食品、メリヤス、化学などの工業があり、農産物の集散地となっている。19世紀の初め、イギリスが軍の駐屯地としたことから発達した。とくに19世紀なかばの数年間の発展は目覚ましく、その間に人口が約3倍に急増した。「セポイの反乱」は、そのころこの地を発端として起こったものである。いまも市の北部にインド軍の広大な駐屯地がある。
