Boole, George
Born November 2, 1815, Lincoln
[Died] December 8, 1864. Ballintemple, Cork. British mathematician and logician. Founder of algebraic logic, also known as Boolean lattice (Boolean algebra). He only had a few years of formal education at a local school, and was mostly self-taught in mathematics. He began teaching at a village school at the age of 16, and founded a school in Lincoln, England at the age of 20. He studied the works of Newton, P. Laplace, J. Lagrange, and others in his spare time, and from 1839 he published a rapid succession of papers on algebra. In recognition of his work, he was appointed professor of mathematics at Queen's College, Cork (1849). In 1857, he was elected a member of the Royal Society. He produced an algebraic treatment of logic. Boolean algebra is now used in many fields, including computers. He also wrote a book on analysis, which was used as a textbook for many years. His major works include "Mathematical Analysis of Logic" (47), "The Laws of Thought" (54), "Treatise on Differential Equations" (59), and "The Method of Difference" (60).
