Dandy

Japanese: ダンディ
Dandy
French composer and music educator. Born in Paris to an aristocratic family from the south of France. After serving in the Franco-Prussian War, he was introduced by his friend Duparc and began studying composition and organ under C. Franck in 1872. He looked up to Franck as his teacher for the rest of his life. He also visited Bayreuth many times from 1876 onwards, where he attended the premieres of Der Ring des Nibelungen and Parsifal, and developed a deep admiration for R. Wagner. In 1887, he produced one of his masterpieces, Symphony on Songs of the French Mountain Men. The work reflects various elements of his artistic outlook, including the folk song collection he began in 1844 in his ancestral region of Bivalais, his passionate French nationalism inspired by Wagner, and the circular form he learned from Franck. In 1894, he founded the Schola Cantorum in Paris with composer C. Bordes (1863-1909) and others under the banner of reviving religious music, and two years later he became a professor at the music school that opened, teaching D. de Sebrac (1872-1921), Roussel, Auric, and others. He left behind works in various genres, including orchestral pieces such as two symphonies (1870-1872, 1902-1903), the symphonic variations "Istar" (1896), and "Summer Day in the Mountains" (1905), as well as operas, chamber music, piano pieces, sacred vocal pieces, and songs. →Honegger/Konoe Hidemaro/Chausson →Related topics Albéniz | Chabrier | Barès | Porter
