This refers to soil that inhibits crop growth due to some defect in its inherent properties or properties brought about by subsequent soil management. Poor soils include acidic soils, poor volcanic ash soils, peat soils, heavy clay, sandy or gravelly soils, and soils lacking trace elements, but the term is not necessarily limited to these soils, and may be interpreted as synonymous with low-yield fields with low crop productivity. Poor soils are widely distributed in Japan, accounting for about half of the total area of farmland, but poor volcanic ash soils and acidic soils account for the overwhelming majority of poor soils.
