ESCAP is a regional economic commission established in March 1947 under the Economic and Social Council, the main body of the United Nations. It was originally called the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), but was renamed ESCAP in 1974 because the Pacific islands had joined and because it placed emphasis on social development as well as economic issues. *Some of the terminology that mentions "ECAFE" is listed below.
