…Educational institutions for monks established by various Buddhist sects during the Edo period, also called gakuryo, danrin, or danrin. The Edo Shogunate made it compulsory for each sect to attend school to study religious studies, but Buddhist studies centered on religious studies developed rapidly within each sect, and they required people to study at gakurin or other institutions for a certain period of time in order to become a chief priest. The main ones are as follows: In the Jodo sect Chinzei school, dansho were established in various places in the Middle Ages, but in the early Edo period, Zojoji Son'o conspired with Tokugawa Ieyasu to establish the so-called Kanto 18 danrin, consisting of the Five Danrin in Edo, such as Zojoji in Shiba and Denzuin in Koishikawa, and the Thirteen Danrin in the countryside, such as Komyo-ji in Kamakura and Shogan-ji in Musashino. …
