Orthotungstic acid H ₂ WO ₄ is formed in an aqueous solution of tungsten(VI) oxide WO ₃ , which condenses to form metatungstic acid H ₆ [H ₂ W ₁₂ O ₄₀ ] and paratungstic acid H ₁₀ [H ₁₀ W ₁₂ O ₄₆ ] (polytungstic acid), a compound with the general formula x M ^I ₂ O･ y WO ₃ ･ z H ₂ O. When y / x = 1, it is ortho, when 12/5, it is para, and when 4, it is metatungstate. Usually, it refers to the simplest orthotungstate. Orthotungstate M ^I ₂ WO ₄ , the alkali metal salts K ₂ WO ₄ , Na ₂ WO ₄ and the ammonium salt (NH ₄ ) ₂ WO ₄ are colorless crystals that dissolve in water and are alkaline.
