Sea fog

Japanese: 海霧 - うみぎり

Also read as "kaimu." Fog occurs when moist, warm air is carried over the cold ocean surface, and the lower atmosphere is cooled below the dew point by the cold water surface. Most of it is advection fog. Sea fog occurs in the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans as summer tropical air masses move north, and lasts for a long time. Fog occurs when cold air over the polar ice fields flows out onto the sea surface, and is called Arctic sea fog.

〈かいむ〉とも読む。湿潤，温暖な空気が寒冷な海面に運ばれ，下層大気が冷水面により露点温度以下に冷却されて生ずる霧。大半が移流霧。夏季熱帯気団が北上して太平洋，大西洋北部で生ずる海霧は持続期間が長い。極地の氷原上の寒冷空気が海面上に流出して発生する霧は蒸気霧で，北極海の海煙などと呼ばれている。
