Temple and shrine main land

Japanese:
Temple and shrine main land
This legal term was used and established by the Muromachi Shogunate during the Nanboku-cho period. It refers to the manors and provincial government lands of temples and shrines, which are contrasted with samurai lands. In this case, honjo lands specifically refer to the aristocratic lands of the Imperial family and the regent family, but originally the term was used to include temples and shrines. Even looking at examples of usage in the Kamakura Shogunate Law, it is considered that temples and shrines are included in the honjo lands and the whole land, as it is written that up until the mid-Kamakura period, "jito gokenin and residents of the honjo lands and the whole land," so it is considered that temples and shrines are included in the honjo lands and the whole land. This usage changed and a distinction was made between honjo lands and temples and shrines from the time when the Shogunate Law of 1288 (Shoo 1) read "jito gokenin and residents of the honjo lands and the whole land of temples and shrines," and from then on, the distinction was made in both the laws of the Kenmu New Government and the Muromachi Shogunate Law.
