It is a private institution. It was founded in 1886 (Meiji 19) as Kyoritsu Women's Vocational School, and later as Kyoritsu Women's College, before being established as a university under the new system in 1949 (Showa 24). As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it has a Faculty of Home Economics (4 departments: Clothing, Food and Nutrition, Architecture and Design, and Childhood Studies), which continues the tradition of Japan's first women's vocational school, a Faculty of Literature, a Faculty of International Studies, and a graduate school with three departments: Home Economics, Literature, and Comparative Culture, and also has a junior college.
