Granite is a general term for a group of processes in which rocks with different chemical compositions and textures (such as sandstone or mudstone) change into granite through the inflow and outflow of materials without going through a molten state (magma). It is also called transformation. Granite is the second most common rock on the Earth's surface after basalt, and appears in large quantities especially in the cores of stable continents (shields) and in the central parts of surrounding orogenic belts. For this reason, there has long been interest in the origin of granite, and there are two competing theories: one that it was formed by the solidification of magma, and the other that it was formed by granitization.
