Briançon (English spelling)

Japanese: ブリアンソン - ぶりあんそん(英語表記)Briançon
Briançon (English spelling)
A town in the Hautes-Alpes department in southeastern France. Population 9,710 (1982). Located on the upper reaches of the Durance River in the southern French Alps, it is said to be the highest town in Europe (1,326m above sea level), and the surrounding mountains are over 3,000m high. The old town (Briançon Vauban) is a military town surrounded by fortifications dating back to the 17th century. Outside the fortifications, the new town (Sainte-Catherine) spreads out on the slopes facing the Durance River and its tributary, the Guizane River. It was once a strategic town near the Italian border, but today it is off the main railway line and has become a regional city in the mountains.
