American film director. Born January 23rd in Crestwood, Kentucky. In his youth, he tried various professions, performing on stage as an actor while dreaming of becoming a Shakespeare in the future, but in 1908 he entered the film industry. He turned from being an actor and scriptwriter to being a director, and released the short film "Dolly's Adventure" (1908). After that, he released works one after another, and became a great director representing American film in both quality and quantity. Griffith, who is praised as the "father of cinematography," has achieved the development of the narrative structure of feature films by pioneering various film techniques, and has nurtured many talents such as stars and directors who carry the weight of Hollywood. In particular, "Intolerance" (1916) had a great impact on filmmakers and audiences around the world. His work trends can be broadly divided into the short and medium-length period from 1908 to 1914, and the feature-length period from 1915 to his later years. Griffith's technique of cross-cutting or parallel montage, which depicts two or more actions in parallel, became popular with audiences as his specialty, the "last minute rescue." However, in his later years, the sentimentalism of Victorian melodrama became a hindrance, and although he made three talkies, he dropped out of the film industry. He died in Hollywood on July 23, 1948. Other notable works include The Lonely Cottages and The Corn Hoard (both 1909), Enoch Arden (1911), The Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912), The Battle of Elderbush Crane (1913), The Assyrian Campaign (1914), The Birth of a Nation (1915), The Heart of the World (1918), Falling Flowers (1919), The Passage East (1920), and Orphans of the Tempest (1921).
