European Trade Union Confederation (English: YOROPPAROREN)

European Trade Union Confederation (English: YOROPPAROREN)

The central federation of trade unions in Europe. Abbreviated as ETUC. In Japan, it is also called the European Trade Union Confederation. Founded in 1958 as the European Trade Union Secretariat of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). It changed its name once in 1969, and was re-established under its current name in February 1973. The following year, 1974, it added organizations affiliated with the Christian International Trade Union Confederation (WCL), and in 1975, it also admitted the General Confederation of Italian Labour (CGIL), an associate member of the World Confederation of Trade Unions (WFTU). After that, ETUC widened its doors, admitting communist organizations such as the Spanish Workers' Committee (joined in 1990) and the French General Confederation of Labour (CGT, joined in 1999), as well as white-collar and professional union organizations. Furthermore, since 1996, it has also admitted union organizations from Central and Eastern Europe. In response to European integration, it aims to establish a labor-management relations system at the European level. As of 2010, the association has 82 member organisations from 36 countries and 12 European industry-specific organisations.
