European water shrew
A mammal of the family Soricidae in the order Insectivora. An aquatic shrew found widely in Eurasia from the UK to Sakhalin. The dorsal body is brown to black, and the ventral side is white to grey. The edges of the limbs are densely covered with stiff hairs, which act as a water webbing. It is similar in both morphology and ecology to the Japanese water shrew, but whereas the Japanese water shrew belongs to the subfamily Soricinae, this species belongs to the subfamily Soricinae and is characterized by red tips of its teeth. Body length 6.7-9.6cm, tail length 4.5-7.7cm, weight 12-18g.

食虫目トガリネズミ科の哺乳類。イギリスからサハリンまでのユーラシアに広く分布する水生のトガリネズミ。体色は背面が褐色から黒色,腹面は白色から灰色。手足の縁に硬い毛が密生し,みずかきの役割をする。日本のカワネズミに形態,生態ともに似るが,カワネズミがジネズミ亜科に属するのに対して,本種はトガリネズミ亜科に属し,歯の先が赤色であるのが特色。体長6.7~9.6cm,尾長4.5~7.7cm,体重12~18g。
