After World War I, in response to Italy's demand for the annexation of Fiume (the Italian name for the Yugoslav city of Rijeka), volunteer troops led by D'Annunzio occupied the city for over a year. Fiume was a port city on the Adriatic Sea that was under Hungarian control, but after the war it came under the joint administration of the Allied forces in November 1918. Prior to this, the Fiume National Council had declared its annexation with Italy, and the Italian government (the Orlando Cabinet) also demanded that Fiume be returned to Italy at the Paris Peace Conference that began in January 1919.
