Communist Party of Ukraine (English spelling) Komunistychna Patiya Ukrainy
It was the ruling party in Ukraine during the Soviet era, and maintained its position as the largest party even after independence. After the declaration of independence in August 1991, it was forced to suspend its activities as a political party, but re-formed in May 1993, and registered again in October of the same year, on the condition that it give up its assets from the Soviet era. Even after reorganization, it continues to base its support on communist forces, and advocates social justice and communism for the people. It has taken the lead in the anti-capitalist and anti-nationalist cause, and in the first Verkhovna Rada elections held in March 1994, it became the largest party despite only winning a quarter of the seats. In February 1997, it agreed to cooperate with the Ukrainian Socialist Party and the Ukrainian Peasant Party, and in the general elections of March 1998, it maintained its position as the largest party, although it did not win a majority.
