Shino Pottery

Japanese: 志野陶 - しのとう

A type of elegant pottery fired in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture during the Momoyama period. A pale yellowish-white, rounded base is covered with a milky glaze made of feldspar alone, with simple iron painting added. Those with red flame colors in places on the yuzu-hada (citron skin) glaze and on the exposed parts were popular. The main types of ware are tea ware such as tea bowls, flower vases, water jars, and water pitchers, as well as tableware such as bowls, plates, mukozuke (snacks), and choko (small sake cups), as well as incense containers and oil cups. Types include (1) plain Shino, which has no design; (2) picture Shino, which has iron painting applied under the glaze; (3) mouse Shino, which is made by applying a clay with a high iron content to the base, then applying a scratched design and a feldspar glaze; (4) Aka Shino, which is colored red by applying a clay with a slightly lower iron content and then a feldspar glaze; and (5) Neriage Shino, which is made by kneading iron-rich clay and white clay.

桃山時代に現岐阜県東濃地域で焼かれた雅陶の一種。淡黄白色のざんぐりとした素地に長石単味の乳濁釉を施し，簡素な鉄絵を加える。柚子肌（ゆずはだ）の釉のところどころ，および露胎部に赤い火色の出たものが好まれた。器種は茶碗，花生，水指，建水などの茶陶を主とし，鉢，皿，向付，猪口などの食器類のほか，香合（こうごう），油盞などさまざまのものがある。種類には，(1)文様のない無地志野，(2)釉下に鉄絵を施した絵志野（えしの），(3)素地に鉄分の多い泥漿（でいしよう）を施し，搔落し文様を施して長石釉をかけた鼠志野（ねずみしの），(4)やや鉄分の少ない泥漿をかけ，長石釉を施して赤く発色させた赤志野，(5)鉄分の多い土と白色の土を練り上げてつくった練上志野（ねりあげしの）などがある。
