Chunichi Shimbun - Chunichi Shimbun

Published by the Chunichi Shimbun Company in Nagoya, it is the largest regional newspaper in Japan, with a readership mainly throughout the Chubu region. Nagoya's two major newspapers, Shin Aichi (founded in 1888) and Nagoya Shimbun (founded in 1906), merged on September 1, 1942 (Showa 17) to form the Chubu Nippon Shimbun, which changed its title to Chunichi Shimbun in 1965 (Showa 40). After World War II, it took the lead in adopting technological innovations across the board in newspaper production, and continued to produce ambitious newspapers, developing into the largest and most influential newspaper in the Chubu region. In 1967, it received a transfer of newspaper publishing rights from the Tokyo Shimbun Company, and became the publishing head office of the Tokyo Shimbun. In 1971, the company name was changed from Chubu Nippon Shimbun to Chunichi Shimbun, and it was reorganized into a four-headquarters system with the Nagoya Head Office, Hokuriku Head Office (Kanazawa City), Tokyo Head Office, and Tokai Head Office (Hamamatsu City). In Kanazawa, they publish the Hokuriku Chunichi Shimbun, in Tokyo the Tokyo Shimbun, as well as the Chunichi Sports, Tokyo Chunichi Sports, and the Nikkan Kenmin Fukui. They are affiliated with Kyodo News, and have built a wide network of branches and bureaus in the Chubu and Kanto regions, as well as bureaus in 13 cities overseas (as of 2010), including Washington, London, Paris, Moscow, and Beijing, to create a rich newspaper with original articles. The Chunichi Shimbun boasts an overwhelming share of sales in Aichi Prefecture, and is also the top in Mie and Gifu Prefectures. Sales are approximately 2,707,000 copies for the morning edition and approximately 556,000 copies for the evening edition (2010). The combined sales of the general newspapers Chunichi Shimbun, Hokuriku Chunichi Shimbun, and Tokyo Shimbun, which are affiliated with the Japan ABC Association, are approximately 3,357,000 copies for the morning edition and approximately 810,000 copies for the evening edition (2010).
