1855‐1922 A Yugoslav (Croatian) painter. As a poor sailor, he painted portraits in America as a boy, but in 1877 he won a scholarship to enter the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) in Paris, where he studied under Cabanel. From the following year he was selected for the Salon. He showed outstanding drawing skills and a style that emphasized narrative content. He also produced many portraits in England. On returning to Zagreb in 1994, he became a central figure in Croatian nationalist artistic activity at the time. In 1903 he was invited to become a professor at the Academy of Arts in Prague, where he died, but his final years were not well-received.
