Vlaho Bukovac

A Yugoslav (Croatian) painter. As a poor sailor, he painted portraits in America as a boy, but in 1877 he won a scholarship to enter the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) in Paris, where he studied under Cabanel. From the following year he was selected for the Salon. He showed outstanding drawing skills and a style that emphasized narrative content. He also produced many portraits in England. On returning to Zagreb in 1994, he became a central figure in Croatian nationalist artistic activity at the time. In 1903 he was invited to become a professor at the Academy of Arts in Prague, where he died, but his final years were not well-received.

ユーゴスラビア(クロアチア)の画家。貧しい船員としての少年時代にはアメリカで肖像画を描くが，奨学金を得て，1877年パリのエコール･デ･ボザール(国立美術学校)に入学。カバネルに師事。翌年以降サロンに入選。卓抜なデッサン力を見せ，物語的内容を重視する作風を示す。イギリスでも肖像画を多く制作。94年ザグレブに戻るとともに，当時のクロアチアの民族主義的芸術活動の中心人物となる。1903年プラハの芸術アカデミーの教授に招かれ，同地で没するが，晩年は不遇であった。
