A general term for insects in the Coccinellidae family of the Coccinellidae order, or one of these species. The ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis (illustration) is a species commonly found throughout Japan and is also known as the two-spotted ladybird. It is 7 to 8 mm long. It is also found in Siberia, China, Taiwan, etc. The markings on the elytra vary widely, but are divided into individuals with a red background (ben type), individuals with multiple red markings on a black background (marked type), individuals with four red markings on a black background (four-marked type), and individuals with two red markings on a black background (two-marked type). Adults are active from spring to autumn, but their numbers decrease from late July to early September.

甲虫目テントウムシ科の昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。テントウムシHarmonia axyridis（イラスト）は日本各地にふつうに見られる種類でナミテントウとも呼ばれる。体長7～8mm。シベリア，中国，台湾などにも分布する。上翅の斑紋は変化に富むが，地色が赤色の個体(紅型)，黒地に赤色多紋の個体(斑型)，黒地に赤色4紋の個体(四紋型)，黒地に赤色2紋の個体(二紋型)に分けられる。成虫は春から秋まで活動するが，7月下旬から9月上旬にはその数が減る。
