A long, narrow island in the southwest of the Philippines, bounding the northwestern Sulu Sea. It stretches 400km from northeast to southwest, and is 5km wide at its narrowest point. A steep mountain range runs through the center. The highest point is Mount Mantalingahan (2,086m). The coast is full of complex inlets and outlets, and resort development is underway to take advantage of the unusual scenery. The underground rivers created by the karst topography in the Puerto Princesa region in the center were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. There are mineral resources such as mercury and chromium ore, but they are undeveloped. The inhabitants are Muslims (Moros) in the south and Christian Visayans in the north. The capital is Puerto Princesa. Area: 11,785 km2 . Population: 528,000 (1990). → Related article Philippines Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
