Soviet politician. Born on November 21 in Saratov Prefecture (Ulyanovsk Oblast, Russian Federation) to a poor peasant family. Joined the party in 1921. Graduated from Moscow University of National Economics in 1928, and became a full-time activist in party organizations from 1931. Became Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party in 1947, a position he held until his death on January 25, 1982. Was a member of the Central Committee and a member of the Politburo from October 1952 to March 1953, and from July 1955 onwards. At one time he also served as editor-in-chief of the party's organ, Pravda. Since 1954 he has been chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. An expert on ideological issues, he debated with General Secretary Deng Xiaoping at the Sino-Soviet Communist Party Conference in 1963, and visited Japan in 1968 (Showa 43) to adjust relations with the Japanese Communist Party, which had been severed. His body was buried in Moscow's Red Square.

ソ連の政治家。11月21日サラトフ県(ロシア連邦ウリヤノフスク州)の貧農の家に生まれる。1921年に入党。1928年にモスクワ国民経済大学を卒業後、1931年から党機関の専従活動家。1947年に党中央委員会書記になって以来、1982年1月25日に死去するまで、ずっとその地位を維持。1952年10月~1953年3月と1955年7月以降、党中央委幹部会員・政治局員。一時、党機関紙『プラウダ』編集長を兼任。1954年以降ソ連最高会議連邦会議外交委員長。イデオロギー問題の専門家で、1963年の中ソ共産党会談で鄧小平(とうしょうへい)総書記と論争、1968年(昭和43)に来日し、断絶状態にあった日本共産党との関係の調整にあたった。遺体はモスクワの赤の広場に葬られた。
