Bluebell - Bluebell

Japanese: ルリソウ - るりそう
Bluebell - Bluebell

A perennial plant of the family Boraginaceae (APG classification: Boraginaceae). The entire plant is covered with coarse hairs, and the stems are 20-40 cm tall. The basal leaves are small. The stem leaves are alternate, and the lower leaves are large, oblanceolate, and pointed at the tip. From April to June, the tip of the stem splits into two, and pale blue five-petaled flowers bloom. The pods have rows of hook-shaped spines along the edge. They grow in forests in low mountain areas, and are found in Honshu, Hokkaido, and the Chubu region northward. The name comes from the color of the flowers. In the genus Boraginaceae, the dorsal edge of the pods is entire or has rows of hook-shaped spines, and is dented like a navel. There are about 28 species in the world, and in Japan, in addition to this species, there are Yamarurisou, Hairurisou, and Etigorurisou.
