... The struggle against Academism began after 1870, when Grigorescu, a member of the Barbizon School, introduced plein air themes and impressionist techniques to Romanian art. His successor, Ion Andreescu (1850-82), painted melancholic landscapes, adding depth to modern Romanian painting, but died of illness the same year he returned from Paris. Stefan Luchian (1868-1916), who founded the Salon of Independent Artists in Bucharest in 1896, played a leading role. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, and although he struggled with illness from 1901 onwards, he produced dramatic and passionate works that had a major impact on the Romanian art world in the first half of the 20th century. ...
