The original meaning of the word is a compound word of the Greek words "theos" (god) and "ergon" (action), which means "divine action." It is sometimes translated as "séance." Originally, it referred to magic practiced among Egyptian Neoplatonists, in which gods or demons were summoned to grant one's wishes, to make predictions or warnings through a medium, or to perform various miracles. Later, the word came to mean "white magic," in distinction from "black magic," which harms humans. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
