Sociologist and scholar of religion. Born in Okayama Prefecture. After graduating from Doshisha University, he studied at Harvard University in the United States and introduced American sociology to Japan. He was a member of the Sociological Society, which was established in 1896 (Meiji 29), and was also a member of the Socialism Study Group, which was formed in 1898 with Katayama Sen and others. As shown in his book Sociology (1898), his position was that of Christian socialism, and he attempted to unify sociology and socialism from the perspective of social reform. He was also interested in comparative religion, and in 1896 he founded the Comparative Religion Study Group together with Anesaki Masaharu, becoming a pioneer in the sociology of religion. His books in this field include Comparative Study of Religion (1895), Religious Studies (1899), Ethics and Religious Current Affairs (1900), and Comparative Religion Group (1902).
