Bukovina (English spelling)

Japanese: ブコビナ(英語表記)Bukovina
Bukovina (English spelling)
The name of a region in Eastern Europe. Refers to the northeastern part of the Carpathian Mountains and the plains that follow. Ukrainians and Romanians immigrated there between the 6th and 12th centuries. It later became part of the Ottoman Empire, and then Russia. It was annexed by Austria in 1775, and became part of Romania after World War I. However, in 1940, the Soviet Union, which claimed "Ukraine for Ukrainians," occupied the northern part, centered on the city of Chernivtsi. The Treaty of Paris in 1947 confirmed that the northern part (about 8,400 km2 ) belonged to the Soviet Union, and the southern part (about 4,900 km2 ) to Romania. The inhabitants are mainly Ukrainians in the north and Romanians in the south, as well as Russians, Jews, Germans, etc. Nearly half of the region is fir and beech forest (the name Bukovina comes from the Slavic word buk for beech), and the lumber industry is thriving. The plains of the Prut and Siret river basins produce corn, sugar beets, barley, potatoes, and other crops.
