A type of Buddhist print. Images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and devas are carved into woodblocks, then printed on paper with ink or vermilion. Usually, many are printed using one block. The size of the block and the printing method differ from that of suributsu. Stupas and stamp Buddhas were popular in China from the end of the Tang Dynasty to the Five Dynasties, and in Japan they began in the Heian period, with many surviving examples dating back to the Kamakura period. They are based on the belief in offering a thousand Buddhas to the Buddha, which seeks to gain merit by creating many Buddha statues. They are often placed inside the Buddha statue's womb (→ Buddha in the womb) in hopes of gaining merit by creating many Buddhas in the process of creating one.
