It is the official language of the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname (South America), and the Dutch Antilles (Caribbean). It has a total speaker population of about 20 million. It is also one of the official languages ​​of the EU (European Union). Linguistically, it is considered a dialect of German. It is classified as a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, along with German, English, and Frisian.

Old Dutch is often treated as a tribal language within the Germanic languages, as Old Low Frankish or Old Saxon, rather than Dutch itself. Its oldest document is from the Carolingian period (751-911), and is an annotation to a Latin law text. Middle Dutch dates from about 1200-1600. The foundation of modern Dutch was laid by the translation of the Bible (Staten Bijbel) carried out between 1619 and 1637, and the language after this is classified as New Dutch. After the Second World War, a major national language reform was carried out, with the spelling simplified and the grammar made more realistic. The current standard language is called ABN (Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands), and it is said that the language closest to it is the language of Haarlem, a city in the north of the Netherlands.

Phonology is similar to English, as it has not undergone the Secondary Consonant Shift. Grammar shows similar characteristics to other European languages, such as two genders for nouns, verb conjugation, and adjective conjugation. There are few types of conjugation, and the rules are not as complicated as those of German. The subjunctive (conditional) mood does not require special verb conjugations. Vocabulary differs greatly between written language and everyday conversational language. Overall, it gives an impression very similar to German, for example, Het huis heeft een rood dak en een rode muur. (The house has a red roof and red walls).

There are many dialects, of which Flemish in northern Belgium is famous as a major dialect, and Afrikaans, the official language of South Africa, is also a major language in southern Africa, and is sometimes treated as a dialect of Dutch, as it is derived from Afrikaans.

The Dutch language has its own literature, and the 17th century poet Vondel is comparable to Shakespeare in enriching the language. The best-known work written in Dutch is The Diary of Anne Frank.

During the Edo period, the Netherlands conducted trade in Nagasaki, and many Dutch words were introduced into Japanese. Some of these words are still in use today, such as "doek" (zuk) and "trap" (trap). Words that at first glance seem to be pure Japanese or Chinese characters, such as "oxygen" (zuurstof = zuur "sour" + stof "element"), are actually translations from Dutch.

In addition, the Dutch language had a significant influence on the Indonesian language because the Netherlands ruled Indonesia as a colony for about 350 years.

オランダ、ベルギー、スリナム（南米）、オランダの自治領アンティル諸島（カリブ海）の公用語。言語人口は合計で約2000万人。EU（ヨーロッパ連合）の公用語の一つにも採用されている。言語学的には、ドイツ語の一方言といえる。またドイツ語、英語、フリジア（フリースラント）語とともに、インド・ヨーロッパ語族の西ゲルマン語派に分類される。

　古オランダ語は、オランダ語というよりも、古低フランク語、古ザクセン語として、ゲルマン諸語全体のなかの部族語として扱われることが多い。その最古の文献はカロリング朝時代（751～911）のもので、ラテン語の法律につけた注釈である。中期オランダ語はほぼ1200～1600年のものである。今日のオランダ語の基礎をつくったのは、1619～37年に行われた聖書の翻訳（国定訳聖書Staten-Bijbel）で、これ以後を新オランダ語として分類する。第二次世界大戦後、大幅な国語改革が行われ、綴(つづ)り字が簡略化され、文法も現実に即したものになった。現在の標準語はABN(アーベーエヌ)（Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands）とよばれ、これにもっとも近いのは、オランダ北部の都市ハールレムの言語だといわれる。

　音韻は、第二次子音推移を経ていないので、英語に近い。文法は、名詞に二つの性、動詞の人称変化、形容詞の変化など、他のヨーロッパ諸語と同様の特徴を示す。変化のタイプは少なく、ドイツ語ほど複雑な規則はない。接続法（仮定法）の表現にも、動詞の特別な変化形を必要としない。語彙(ごい)は、文章語と日常会話語の差が大きい。全体には、たとえば、Het huis heeft een rood dak en een rode muur.（その家は赤い屋根と赤い壁をもっている）のように、ドイツ語によく似た印象を与える。

　方言が多く、ベルギー北部のフラマン語はその大方言として有名である。また南部アフリカの大言語で、南アフリカ共和国の公用語であるアフリカーンス語はこの言語から派生したので、オランダ語の一方言として扱われることもある。

　独自の文学をもち、17世紀の詩人フォンデルは、この言語を豊かにした点において、シェークスピアに匹敵する業績をあげた。オランダ語で書かれた文献でもっとも知られているのは『アンネの日記』であろう。

　オランダは、江戸時代、長崎で通商をしていたため、オランダ語から日本語に多くの語が入った。そのなかには、今日でも使われているものがある。たとえば、ズックdoek、タラップtrapなどである。酸素（zuurstof＝zuur「酸っぱい」＋stof「元素」）のように、一見、純粋な日本語、漢語のように思えるものも、オランダ語からの翻訳であることがある。

　また、オランダがインドネシアを約350年間にわたり植民地として支配したため、オランダ語はインドネシア語に少なからぬ影響を与えた。
