A library with origins in the French royal family. Until 1926, it was one of the national libraries, along with the Arsenal Library, which was built in the 18th century by Marquis de Portmy on the site of the mansion in Sully where the Arsenal arsenal was in charge of, and which focused on literature, the Opera Library, and the Conservatoire Library. In the same year, these were combined into the National Library Union, which was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. In 1981, these four libraries were unified into the Bibliothèque Nationale, which came under the Ministry of Culture, but each library is divided into 12 sections called "départements."
