Spread spectrum communication

Japanese: スペクトル拡散通信 - スペクトルかくさんつうしん（英語表記）spread spectrum communication

Also known as SS for short. A type of wideband transmission method that transmits information using an extremely wide frequency bandwidth compared to normal methods. This method has functions such as address (remote station) selection, code division multiplexing, high-resolution distance measurement, and interference removal. Other features include low power density and privacy. Research on this method has been conducted since the 1940s, but it has not attracted much attention in Japan. However, in 1978, an article about spread spectrum communication appeared on the front page of a newspaper, and it suddenly attracted attention.

略してSSともいう。通常の方式に比べて極端に広い周波数帯幅を使用して情報の伝送を行う一種の広帯域伝送方式。この方式は，番地(相手局)選択，符号分割多重化，高分解能距離測定，干渉除去などの機能を有する。また，電力密度が小さいこと，秘話性を有することも特徴にあげられる。この方式の研究は，1940年代から行われていたが，日本では，それほど注目されていなかった。ところが，78年に，新聞の一面トップにスペクトル拡散通信に関する記事が掲載されたことにより，一躍注目を浴びるようになった。
