He is the patron deity of horses, and is variously called and written as Katsuzen, Masazen, Munezen, Sozen, and so on. There are guardian deities of cattle and horses all over the country, but Aozen is worshipped more in eastern Japan, especially in the Tohoku region. In each district of Iwate Prefecture, on the festival day of Aozen-jinja, offerings are made, horses are beautifully decorated, and a pilgrimage is made. Also, when a foal is born, sacred sake is offered and neighbors are invited to celebrate. In Senboku District, Akita Prefecture, a priest for the stable festival, Sarumaru Dayu, comes during the New Year to offer prayers. Aozen-sama is often enshrined on a shelf set up on the main pillar of the house or above the flooring leading up to the living room.
