Momoyama art, an expression of the heightened emotions of the time, was subdued with the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate and feudal domain system, which was based on national isolation, the stabilization of social classes, and a policy of civil rule. The character of Momoyama art, which was fueled by large-scale construction by those in power, remained strong until the 1630s, but thereafter, as the ruling class gradually lost artistic creativity and the dominated class took over as the leading role, the distinctive characteristics of Edo art began to become apparent.
