Ruth Saint-Denis

American female dancer. Some say she was born in 1880. Before making her debut as a creative dancer, she worked as an actress, toe dancer, model, and other professions. In 1904, she saw a statue of the goddess Isis on an Egyptian cigarette poster, which prompted her to embark on the path of artistic dance. She conceived a dance piece called Egypt, but gave up due to financial reasons. Instead, she created a small production of Indian dance, Radha, which was successfully presented in New York in 1906.

アメリカの女流舞踊家。生年には1880年説もある。創作舞踊家としてデビューする以前には，女優，トー･ダンサー，モデルなどの職業を転々とする。1904年にエジプト･タバコのポスターで女神イシス像を見たことをきっかけとして芸術舞踊の道を歩みはじめる。舞踊作品《エジプト》を構想するが，経費面で断念し，かわりにインド舞踊の小さなプロダクションを作り06年に《ラダRadha》をニューヨークで発表して成功をおさめる。
