...In 1769, engineer W. von Kemplen invented an automaton (actually a fake robot operated by a human hidden inside) that could play chess against humans, and it became a hugely popular attraction for about half a century. Robert Houdin of France, often called the father of modern magic, demonstrated stage magic with innovative direction at his own small theater in 1845, paving the way for the modernization of magic. Robert Houdin swept away the magical atmosphere that had been present in the performances of previous magicians wearing magician's costumes from the stage, and established a smart and cheerful performance style that had a great influence on later magicians.
