A type of writing implement. Made by processing slate into a thin slab with a wooden frame attached, a slate pen (a pencil-shaped piece of wax stone with a fatty luster) was used to repeatedly write and calculate. Slate slabs, taking advantage of the black, smooth properties of slate, were used for educational purposes in Europe and the United States from the end of the 18th century, but became popular in Japan after high-quality slate was discovered in Miyagi Prefecture in the early Meiji period. They were widely used for elementary school learning purposes during the Meiji and Taisho periods, but have now disappeared.
