Tyumen - Tyumen (English spelling) Тюмень/Tyumen'

The capital of Tyumen Oblast in central Russia. It is a river port city on both banks of the lower Tura River, a tributary of the Tobol River, and a railway junction, making it a key transportation hub. Population: 503,800 (1999). It is the development base for the oblast's oil and natural gas fields, and has industries such as machinery manufacturing (ship construction and repair, motors, electrical machinery, storage batteries, tractors, construction machinery, forging and pressing machinery, medical machinery, and airplanes), wood processing (lumber, panels, furniture), chemistry (plastics, chemicals), construction materials, light industry, and food. Its origins date back to 1586, when the first Russian town in Siberia was founded on the site of the Tatar town of Chingi-Tura, which was captured by Yermak's troops in 1581 (or 1582).
