Burnouf (English spelling) Eugène Burnouf

He was the founder of modern Indology and Buddhist studies in France. He was well versed in Asian languages ​​from a young age, and at the age of 32, he became a professor of Sanskrit at the Collège de France. After analyzing and studying the many Sanskrit Buddhist manuscripts collected in Nepal by the British scholar Brian Houghton Hodgson (1800-1894), Burnouf wrote Introduction à l'Histoire du Bouddhisme Indien (1844), which remains valuable to this day. He also published a French translation of the Lotus Sutra. Furthermore, his Essai sur le Pāli (1826), which he wrote with his friend Christian Lassen (1800-1876), laid the foundation for Pāli studies in Europe. He endeavored to objectively study and understand Buddhist thought, which was viewed with prejudice in Europe at the time, using strict philological methods, and became one of the founders of modern Oriental studies in the West.

フランスの近代インド学・仏教学の創始者。若くよりアジアの諸言語に通じ、32歳でコレージュ・ド・フランスのサンスクリット語教授となる。イギリスのホジソンBrian Houghton Hodgson（1800―1894）がネパールで採集した多数のサンスクリット語仏典写本を解明・研究して、ビュルヌフが著した『インド仏教史序説』Introduction à l'Histoire du Bouddhisme Indien（1844）は現在もその価値を失わない。また『法華経(ほけきょう)』のフランス語訳も発表した。さらに友人ラッセンChristian Lassen（1800―1876）とともに著した『パーリ語に関する試論』Essai sur le Pāli（1826）はヨーロッパにおけるパーリ語学の基礎を築いた。当時ヨーロッパで偏見をもってみられていた仏教思想を厳密な文献学的方法を用いて客観的に研究・理解することに努め、西欧の近代東洋学研究確立者の一人となった。
