Battle of Gaixia

Japanese: 垓下の戦 - がいかのたたかい

This refers to the decisive battle that took place in 202 BCE in China between Emperor Gaozu of Han and Xiang Yu of Chu. Gāi xià is the site of present-day Lingbi County in Anhui Province. The Han army was defeated in the first battle, and the Chu soldiers were defeated in the second. Surrounded by the Han army on all four sides, Xiang Yu thought that all of Chu had sided with the Han army and accepted his end. He composed the Song of Gai, lamenting his misfortune of being abandoned by heaven, and worrying about the fate of his beloved horse Sui and Yu Mei-jin, before fighting bravely and taking his own life.

中国，前202年に漢の劉邦(高祖)と楚の項羽の間におこなわれた決戦を言う。垓下Gāi xiàは現在の安徽省霊璧県の地である。初戦では漢軍が敗北し，二戦では楚兵が大敗する。四周を漢軍に包囲され，四面みな楚歌するを聞いた項羽は，楚地がすべて漢軍についたと思い，最期と観念した。〈垓下の歌〉を作り，天に見放された不運を嘆き，愛馬の騅（すい）と虞美人（ぐびじん）の行く末を案じたあと，奮戦してみずから命を絶った。
