…Government-sponsored geographical exploration began in the 18th century, and after circumnavigating the Antarctic, the British explorer John Cook sailed north through the Pacific Ocean and reached the western tip of Alaska. In 1818, the British explorer John Ross (1777-1856) entered Lancaster Sound, which runs west from Baffin Bay. From 1829 to 1833, Ross spent two winters in Boothia Gulf, west of Baffin Island, but his nephew and second in command James Clark Ross (1800-62, who later discovered the Ross Sea in Antarctica) was an expert on geomagnetism, and in 1831 discovered the North Magnetic Pole (69.5°N, 95°W). …
