Grand Prince of Kievan Rus, reigned from 980 to 1015. He had been placed in Novgorod by his father, Sviatoslav Igorevich, but after his father's death, he murdered his brother Yaropolk and became Grand Prince of Kievan Rus in 980. At that time, the territory of Kievan Rus was more or less fixed, and the internal affairs of Kievan Rus were being improved, as had been his grandmother Olga's aims, namely, unifying Russia, securing the position of Kiev as the leader of Russia, and strengthening the control of the Grand Duchy. He tried to achieve this based on the traditional faith, but failed, and in 989 he achieved it by adopting Greek Orthodoxy as the state religion.

ロシアのキエフ大公。在位980‐1015年。父スビャトスラフ･イーゴレビチによってノブゴロドに配置されていたが，父の死後兄ヤロポルクを殺害し，980年にキエフ大公となった。当時キエフ･ロシアでは，領域もほぼ一定し，祖母オリガが目指していた内政の充実，すなわちロシアの統一，ロシアの盟主としてのキエフの地位の獲得，大公権力の支配強化等が求められていた。彼はそれを旧来の信仰を基本にして果たそうとしたが失敗に終わり，989年ギリシア正教を国教として受容することによって達成した。
