Sketch - Esquisse (English spelling) esquisse French

It mainly refers to a preliminary sketch in painting. It is a preliminary drawing made to consider the overall composition, proportions, color scheme, etc. It can also mean a rough sketch for architecture, etc., made for a similar purpose. In addition, a small clay or wax model (maquette) made in the first stage of sculpture production is also called an esquisse. It has the same origin as the English word sketch and the Italian word schizo.

おもに絵画制作における下準備のスケッチをさしていう。全体の構図とか比例、配色などを検討するために制作される下図である。同様の目的で制作される建築などのための大まかな構想図（ラフ・スケッチ）を意味することもある。また、彫刻制作の最初の段階でつくられる粘土やろうの小形の習作（マケットmaquette）もエスキスとよばれる。英語のスケッチ、イタリア語のスキッツォなどと語源は同じである。
